Reset

My dealer once forgot to reset the service indicator.
I was told by phone to press the trip button, turn the ignition switch to
position 2 then release the trip button within 20 seconds.

Didn't work on my S40 (but might on yours?) so I had to visit after all.

Ide.

I have a 1998 V70XC...I've come to the conclusion after many years of
trying that the only way to reset the service light is to go to the
dealer, at least for me.

Does anyone know how to reset the service light on a '97 S40???

There is no easy procedure to do this on many Volvo. You have to go to
a dealer or other shop with the correct computer to hook up to your car
and tell the light to go off. Yes, this is lame!

The other alternative is to spend about $250 for an electronic gizmo
which will let you do it for multiple vehicles:

Another alternative is a Volvo only tool such as this one for £45.48:

For some reason the European cars often require the light to be reset by
computer connection while most Asian and American brands provide a
method the owner can easily do themselves. I don't think that Volvo
wants it's owners to be able to do their own maintenance.

Reset service light on Volvo S/V40

1. Simply insert the ignition key, turn to position 1.

2. Hold down the reset mileage stick on the instrument panel.

3. While holding it down, turn the key to position II (on) but don't start
it.

4. While still holding the stick down, after about 10 seconds, the service
light will flash.

5. Release the stick after 3 flashes. If successful, there will be a short
beep and the light will go out.

It is as simple as that! It may take a few goes to get it right though, as
the 3 flashes bit seems to be fairly important.

doesn't work!!!
