Is it the service light, or the engine light, two very different things. The
960 I am familiar with has both, I am pretty sure our old 740 had both too.
The service is just a reminder light, but the malfunction lamp would be
illuminated by an actual problem.
The "SERVICE" light is a REMINDER to change your oil. It stays on about 5 min
when you start the car. Some models have a reset button below the speedo, next
to the trip-reset button. It comes covered with a rubber plug. Remove the
plug and push the button with a small screwdriver. If you have a turbo the
light returns in 5000 miles, non-turbo 10,000 miles. I don't know about
16Valve engines.
The "Check Engine" light is an ALARM. It signifies the need for a repair to the
engine management system.
Al, the service light interval for 16v is 5,000 miles. I can't reset
mine because the rubber stop in the glass (plastic?) is pushed all the
way in and under. It's just annoying but it does turn off after a few
minutes. I've just learned to ignore it.
Just push the button in & when you feel the need just
remove the cluster separate the back & remove the
rubber plug about a 1/2 hour of work for most people
unless you are all thumbs then will take longer
