Sunroof drain tubes

    1989 740 Wagon.

Can someone tell me where the sunroof REAR drain tubes are located? Can
they be accessed from the sunroof area or do you have to remove interior
trim or headliner to get to them?

I have a problem with leaks. Have cleared the front tubes and am
getting water to pass through them. But since I still have a leak I
suspect the rear tubes need to be cleared as well.

    Thanks,
    PB

Well on a sedan they run down through the trunk and have a splice so you
could get to them there and blow them out with something, I'm not really
sure where they are in a wagon but you could remove the access panels from
the sides and look. Otherwise you'll have to remove the headliner, not fun.

I've done this on my 940 wagon/estate, I think its pretty similar.

removing the plastic panel was the most difficult, and I broke a number of
clips, but nothing that was majorly critical. Start at the back with the
    pillar cover and work forward.

If the leak is over the rear door its probably the join of the tube to the
drain channel. On mine the tube was not a good fit and basically loose. A
good hose clip sorted it out, however I still gets leaks occassionally from
the drain channel and I just can't see whats wrong.

You don't need to take the head lining right out, just unscrew the handle,
unclip the side panels, this should give enough access to the join with the
rear side door open. You could also remove the edging on the sunroof and
unclip the centre light fitting for more access.

    Thanks Tony,

I should have mentioned that the leak appears right behind the sunroof
opening. I have not replaced the felt seal around the sunroof yet
because I was told that they are supposed to leak somewhat and the water
is then chanelled off through the drain tubes. Would you suggest
replacing the felt seal as well?

The rear tubes are at the very rear of the sunroof which extends to the rear
portion of the roof. The exit of the tube is in the rear wheelwell. Blowing
up through them usually only unsettles the MUCK causing the problem to
return later. If the front tubes are clear, suspect the evaporator drain for
passenger side water, and the cruise control gromett on the firewall for
    driver side leaks.

How about attaching a shop vac to the drain tubes at the wheel wells then
    flush some water through them?

For me, I replaced the sunroof seal, right after the shop-vac trick (get the
computer keyboard attachments for the vac. It'll sound like a squirrel in a
blender, but it works). The seal isn't really a seal, it's just meant to
keep out debris and copious amounts of water. Mine was just letting so much
in that it was sloshing over the edges.
If you can't get to it straight away, I'd use removeable caulk meant for
drafty windows around the sunroof....then I wouldn't have some cheetah spots
    on my headliner....

    Cheers,
    Andy

  8. I'm having similar flooding issues with my 740 Wagon. There is a deep pool
of water behind the drivers seat and the floor in front of the drivers seat
is extremely wet but does not have standing water. From the descriptions it
sounds like the water might be running down the door post from where the
hose does not connect to the drain.
    Thanks for the suggestion!

If you feel up under the right hand end of the dashboard against the inner skin
you may find a grommet hole with wires going through it where the grommet has
become unseated. Had this on one of my 945s and it caused bucket-fulls of water
to flood drivers floor pan and rear passengers floor pan as well. Got the
grommet reseated and car is now as dry as a bone.

    Cheers, Peter.

Thats unusual, there is a drain gutter just under the glass-roof joint that
should divert water to the drain channels. Try looking in from the side
with the roof angle opened, you might see some way the water is following
something down to drip onto the lining.

I found the plastic cover on the side wall leaked and the water went all the
way to the back seat. The cover is about 4 inches above the floor and is
accessed by removing the kick panel between the door post and the firewall.
I fixed it with some Shoe Goo as it cures with water.
