What's the problem with renting? The kids are grown up and moved out,
there's more free time to enjoy ourselves. We don't need to be spending our
time, on the numerous things that a house requires on a continuing basis.

    Robert,

I would respond to your comments included above, but you've already exposed
    yourself for what you are.

Good luck in your pursuit of happiness in this life!

Eric, did you kinda pick up on that "elitist" attitude from him?

Amazing how he would look at you and think to himself that his car would
suit your needs better. And doing this without even know what others
    needs are?

    Left-wing "logic".

I've also seen many passenger cars on the roofs. It really depends on the
    drivers.

Ask yourself this: When a drunk driver runs a red light and t-bones your
vehicle, would you rather be in a car or an SUV? This happens quite often in
the northeast, particularly in the big cities.

I used to drive cars, then I upgraded to an SUV two years ago. My only regret
is that I didn't buy an SUV sooner.

Sure, an AWD sports car will do fine in two inches of snow. Let's see how it
do with the two-feet snow bank in front of driveway, courtesy of the snow-plow
crew. How about in a blizzard?

Sure, the SUVs are more expensive compared to cars in the same class. People
should buy what they can afford and not over-extending themselves.

Upgrade? Is that what you call a vehicle that is slower, less maneuverable,
has less braking, and based on a pickup? OK, sure, that's an upgrade. Please
read http://poseur.4x4.org/ before jumping on that bandwagon. I'm sure your
wonderful SUV is better than a Ford Taurus, but what isn't? You are the same
type of person that buys a Crown Vic or Grand Marquis when you retire.
Typical middle class moron...Hope your ex-wife, new wife, and 1.5 kids are
    doing great...

not every has a need to impress the world. if performance is your nack. then
get a real sportscar and join a racing club. i did. it's fun. there's no
need for suv's to stop on a dime, neither do cars. but some people are sold
on the fact that hot rod performance rules the road. it doesn't. the all
    mighty dollar does.

i also race motorcycles. it's cheaper than cars and much faster. i do have a
large family and i can afford a corvette. but driving a suburban is more
comfortable. my very first car was a '80 vette for my 16th b-day in high
    school.

what kind of car do you drive? i can show you other similarly priced cars
that has better performance. or even less expensive cars that are hot rod'd
    to out perform your ride.

it really doesn't matter what someone drives. who cares? the only one that
needs to be impressed is yourself. in my case, family comes first, then my
    toys in the weekends.

Here in Minneapolis it is not rare at all to get two feet of snow blocking
the driveway, courtesy of the snow plow. Instead of an SUV, what I like to
do is get the snow blower and clear it off before driving over it. My BMW
with rear wheel drive, did very well with Blizzaks, in winter, never getting
stuck. I expect my '04 S80 will do as well with the same tires. I see too
much of SUVupsidedownonit'sroof syndrome on our freeways to be impressed
    with them.

  15. Why do you have to be offensive to someone who may not share your view on
    vehicles or lifestyle?

Are you perhaps envious of his lifestyle?

Please don't let the fact that you are driving a big SUV lead you to
think you are a good driver. My sister in law thinks her Expedition
makes her immune to flood and snow and ice. One day soon, she'll rely on
her machine instead of her skill, and the thing will flip over seven
times and bite her in the ass. bob

My suggestion for an SUV: Subaru Forester 2.5 XT. Just got my '04. Couldn't
afford a second Volvo (V70 or XC70). This Forester has a five-star crash
rating, front and side. Side air bags in the front seat extend high enough
to protect the head (as accomplished with side curtain bags). Even the
headrest is Volvoesque--it's the active type that protects in rear-enders.
    The turbocharged 2.5 liter 4 cylinder engine produces 210 HP, 235 ft-lbs
torque at 3,600 RPM. Motor Trend tested a manual transmission version that
did 0-60 MPH in 5.3 seconds! (Yes, 5.3.) I find that a bit hard to believe,
but it must be able to do at least low 7's if not high- to mid- 6s. This is
a small SUV (competing with the Honda CRV, Toyota RAV4) but big enough for
me. Rides lower, so it's less "tippy." The flat, opposed-cylinders
boxer-style engine contributes to a lower center of gravity. Full-time AWD.
Seating height is a bit higher, like an SUV. But the car doesn't weigh 4,000
or 4,500 or more pounds. Weight is given as 3,289 on my model (auto trans,
moonroof). EPA is 18 city, 23 highway. And it appears really well-built. I
still love my S60, but there sure is a new "girl" in town! I love this car!

    Mr. Hernia:

Your poor knowledge of SUVs needs a serious upgrade.

    Fact:
    1) Many SUVs are darn fast - Lexus RX330, BMW X5, Acura MDX, Porsche Cayenne
    to name a few.
    2) Many SUVs can outhandle cars - Nissan Murano/Infiniti FX, Porsche Cayenne,
BMW X5 to name a few.
    3) Many SUVs are not based on pickups - Lexus RX, BMW X5, Acura MDX to name a
    few.

Once your wife get T-boned by a Chevy truck in your little two-door coupe,
you'll wish that you've bought her an SUV.
