What's the best model Volvo?

I have an '89 Volvo 240DL but it's given me some trouble so I've been
thinking of switching it for another older Volvo (not limited to
Volvo's thought). My budget is about $5,000 (plus what I get for my
Volvo). what would you guys suggest?
Thanks.

Another, newer, 240.

I would suggest a late-model 940 ('93 - '95), or a '95 - 97 850.

My bias vote is for the 940 (a '95 turbo one if possible). I have one,
and am very happy with the build quality and reliability.

Try a 960 or a 940 turbo - you'll never miss your 240.

Not sure how late of a model Volvo you should want; have heard that since
Ford now runs the show for Volvo that the same quality of earlier Volvos
might be in short supply??

I've been driving 240s almost exclusively for over 20 years (did have
a 745 at one time but...). At the moment, have an '89 245, '92 240
and '93 245 (plus son has another '89 245).. My favorite is the '89.
235K miles on original clutch and blower motor makes less noise than
others. The '93 has always had a softer feel, and I have read that
there was a chassis modification in '92 for a more comfortable ride.
Don't know. Every once in a while I get a wild hair and consider
something more civilized. Asked Volvo shop (7 mechanics almost
exclusively Volvo) about alternatives, such as mid 90s 850 or 940.
His view was stay with 240s for overall reliability/cost. Not right
or wrong, just an opinion.

i second that...you can pick one up on eBay for < 3k...sink
some $ into mods and have a quick, solid.."rocket"... ;-)

The persistent canard in this NG that somehow Volvo will be "tainted" by
being owned by Ford flies in the face of reality. Every company that Ford
has taken over has significantly IMPROVED and BENEFITTED from the
association. Aston-Martin is better than ever. Jaguar improved mightily and
no longer sells "hangar queens". Cosworth still builds the finest race
engines in the world - along with Honda, to be sure. The list goes on....

I, for one, see nothing but good things for Volvo now that a sensible
corporation, rather than a welfare state famous for it's drunkeness, is "in
charge".

Current Volvos are vastly superior to the older ones - and the new ones
being promoted are better still.

What's the "best" Volvo? Any Volvo is the "best" Volvo - and the newer ones,
including my 850, are the ones to buy......

In your opinion. I will continue to buy/drive 240s until I'm either too feeble
to drive or there are no more viable 240s to be found. As for Folvo, if I
wanted to drive a Ford, well, I wouldn't be here, now, would I?

The reason that I drive a Volvo, and have done for some years now, is
that it is a car unlike any other. A Volvo 240, 740, 940 etc can be
recognised from a great distance.
Since Ford took them on they look the same as any other car.
The difference in looks between a V70 and a large ford is just the
grill.

The older body style Volvo is a true classic.

OOOooops (embarrassed look )

Why? That doesn't mean it looks like a Volvo. To me the last year
the V70 looked 850-ish was 2000. The front-end was changed again
for 2001 (but this was still a Volvo design). I think the first
cars that Ford had a major input are the new V50 and the 2005 S40.

I was one of those on this group who really knocked both these cars
for sharing a platform with the new Mazda 3 and the new Focus.
However, after having finally seen and driven the new V50 - it is
definitely not a Mazda 3. I wish I could afford one when they
become available here. I wasn't a big fan of the center console
so much, but it handles beautifully and looks gorgeous.

There are none so blind as those who will not see....

By all means, you are entitled to YOUR opinion and to drive 240s as you
wish. I owned six 240s - all were good cars, but the newer ones are
infinitely better by any standard you can invoke, except for the ability to
work on them yourself because they were much more simply made than today's
cars are.

You don't have to love Ford, but childish insults unsupported by anything
remotely resembling facts doesn't help make your case....

What does jingoism have to do with simple facts? Do you understand what the
word means?

Rubbish - Volvos look like Volvos today, as they always have.....

| The older body style Volvo is a true classic.

Really? How does it qualify as a "true classic"? They were, and are, great
cars - better than most others available, which is why I've owned a number
of them and drive one today, but this year's models look just as much like a
Volvo as any other.

| The V70 was designed when Volvo wasn't owned by Ford.

Don't confuse them with "facts" - thinking often makes their heads
hurt......:)
